Out-of-Home 101: Back to School this Fall with Billboards

Summer's finally over and all over the country students are heading back to school. According to the OAAA "Almost 20 million of those students will be heading to the nation’s 4,409 colleges and universities in the fall — over 5 million more than 20 years ago."

With the growth of online schools creating more competition in the marketplace it's more important than ever for schools to reach out to potential students, and create a strong memorable brand.

That's exactly why Troy University and their agency turned to EMC to manage a billboard campaign targeting prospective continuing education students at military bases, hospitals, and community colleges across the USA.

With very specific targets, strategic placement at key locations was a critical part of the campaign. EMC managed the research and planning of over 60 boards, targeting 31 locations in 13 states across the country to make sure Troy would maximize their reach in each market. And, with almost a dozen different creatives —each catering to that location’s target audience— the logistics of printing, shipping and installing was a project unto itself … deftly handled by our in-house Traffic & Production Dept.

At EMC we specialize in managing the time-consuming details of large-scale campaigns just like this one — for smarter, more streamlined results.

QR Codes and OOH: Connecting the real world to the web

QR Codes - they're popping up all over the OOH landscape, and with good reason - they're a great way for advertisers to create a connection with consumers, and deliver additional information.

But what are they? A QR Code is a special type of bar code that can be scanned by a Smartphone's camera to initiate an activity or a transfer of information. QR Codes can take the viewer to a website, deliver a coupon, link to a Twitter feed, or deliver other information about your product or service right on their phone.

The OOH environment is particularly well suited to employ them as consumers typically have their phones with them —if not already in their hand— when they are away from their home. Use OOH media to open the door, and then use a QR code to take consumers through to the next level of engagement.

Cox Communications used QR codes combined with another cutting edge OOH technique: Mobile Projection. By using projection media they were able to place their advertising at key points to best reach their target audience. The novelty and surprise factor of the media captured people’s attention, and the QR Code allowed them to deliver additional information by connecting consumers to a dedicated website.

Billboards do double duty to sell “weird” pizza & help kids in need.

Want to engage local consumers in a fun and exciting way, get some great branding & PR buzz, and give something back to the local communities at the same time?

That's just what Stevi B's did with their recent billboard campaign in the Atlanta area. We were proud to be a part of it.

Each billboard featured a local kid who likes "weird" pizza. Kids from areas near the restaurants were selected to be on this fun billboard creative through a contest on Stevi B's Facebook page — a nice social media tie-in. Smart too, as the Facebook contest provided local buzz about the local billboards to come.

When these cute faces finally decorated the highways, not only did the billboards drive more customers to Stevi B's restaurants, they also supported a local charity.

A portion of the proceeds collected between June 27th & July 1st at twenty-two Atlanta area Stevi B's restaurants were donated to the Kids in Need Foundation operated by the Atlanta Community Food Bank.

This campaign is a great example of how OOH can work in tandem with other media, and how it can be used to deliver more than just "impressions" by giving back to the local community.

To find out more about how billboards and social media strategies can be used in tandem give us a shout. No question is too “weird”!

Reaching consumers at the beach with a wall of Branded Surfboards

When the Hawaiian craft beer Kona Brewing wanted to raise awareness of their Longboard Island Lager on the mainland they turned to EMC for some creative media. Our solution for reaching summer beach crowds in California was a wall of Branded Surfboards, and an interactive Street Team that would take the Kona brand right out onto the beach!

The boards were a great way to make Kona's Hawaiian heritage a key element in the campaign, and are an example of how creative outdoor can bring a brand to life by incorporating iconic elements and turning them into dynamic and surprising media.

Along with the boards, our team of brand ambassadors engaged consumers and distributed promotional items to crowds that were naturally drawn to the boards.

Consumers were anxious to pose with the boards and the team, and we drew crowds wherever we went.

Everyone wanted to get involved, including bridegrooms . . .

Pets . . .

And even parrots . . . yes, parrots enjoy a tasty lager just like the rest of us!

Each beach event got heated up and gnarly (in a good way) by the team of surfers who took the Kona boards out for a ride, creating a branded surf team and connection with the local surf culture.

At EMC we specialize in finding creative new ways to use out-of-home. Contact us to learn more about how we can help bring your brand to life.

It's Scooter Advertising weekend in our hometown of Philadelphia!

While do work all over the country, it's always exciting to do something in our hometown of Philadelphia - especially when the media is something fun like scooters.

Scooter advertising is a great way to create buzz around events and convention centers, and keep up with attendees as they hit popular local spots like Reading Terminal Market & the Hard Rock.

Overseeing the campaign also helps to keep our team busy while the Phillies are out of town.
